Space has always sparked humanity’s curiosity—encouraging us to look beyond horizons, dream the impossible, and transform imagination into discovery. Today, space exploration is a vital part of science, technology, and our daily lives, no longer just a distant dream.
The theme of World Space Week 2025, “Living in Space,” celebrates these exciting advancements, reminding us that space is now a growing reality with profound impacts on our future. Celebrated worldwide from October 4 to 10, World Space Week raises awareness about space science, technology, and their influence on humanity.
On Wednesday, October 8, 2025, Islamabad Model College for Girls, F/6-2, hosted a special program in the college hall as part of this global celebration. This event was thoughtfully organized by the skilled team of the Physics Department, led by their dedicated head, Dr. Afsheen Khan, in collaboration with the college management, the event featured guest of honour Professor Dr. Farrukh Shahzad—a distinguished ENT surgeon at Polyclinic Hospital Islamabad and Vice President of Pak Astronomers Islamabad. Dr. Shahzad, with over 50 years of astronomy experience and passion since childhood, also impressed as a dedicated astro-photographer.
The event began with the recitation of the Holy Quran followed by a documentary on female astronauts’ lives aboard the International Space Station, stirring interest among students.
The stage secretary role was expertly handled by our talented faculty member Ms. Riffat Sultana. Our Vice Principal was also present to support and encourage the organizers.
A quiz competition on the theme “Living in Space” was held among three teams—Nebula, Constellation, and Supernova—with Horain Yaseen from Supernova winning the final round.
Winners of the poster competition held earlier on October 6 were also announced.
Principal Prof. Ms. Aaliya Durrani expressed gratitude to the Physics Department and guests. Dr. Farrukh Shahzad shared insights into his astronomy journey, basic astrological concepts, and encouraged similar future initiatives.
The second guest, Dr. Saif Sahib, an electronic engineer and colleague of Dr. Shahzad, spoke about his space exploration journey starting from an early fascination with the constellation Dub Akbar.
The program ended on a high note with Dr. Shahzad showcasing his captivating astro-photography of distant galaxies, mesmerizing all attendees.
Certificates were then awarded to winners and participants by the guests and college leadership, concluding a memorable celebration of space and discovery.
